GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
Long Island National Golf Club is a Private 18 Hole Golf Club located in Riverhead, NY. The club is owned by a single owner who purchased the club in the summer of 2013. The 150 plus acre club went private in 2014 and currently has a full membership with an active waiting list. The club does 10,000 rounds annually. There are no outside outings or tournaments.
Long Island National was designed by Golf Course Architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The par 71 golf course originally opened for play in 1999 and is currently 7006 yards long from the back tees. Since the current owner and leadership team’s arrival, the course and grounds have undergone continued improvement projects of various sizes. The course currently delivers a golfing experience that meets the high standards of members and guests who frequent top clubs in the country.
The playing surfaces were originally bentgrass but have faced some encroachment of poa annua. Currently on the greens surfaces there is a large focus on the promotion of bentgrass and management of poa annua. The club has concentrated on and found success removing thatch from all fine turf surfaces and is determined to continue this effort. Improvement of the native areas is ongoing and imperative as the course continues to deliver an improved experience. Many of the recent and current improvement projects have been aimed towards improving the maintenance and playability of the bunkers, with a specific attention on pebble/rock control from the existing soil.
The Toro irrigation system is original from 1999, but recent upgrades have occurred and will continue. Toro smart satellites were installed at the beginning of the 2022 season. Crucial pumphouse and flowtronics improvements began in 2022 and are in progress.
The most recent improvement projects have occurred in-house, with minor outside support, so the ability to perform, or effort to learn, construction tasks is of the utmost importance.
The club is dedicated to continuing to promote an enjoyable team-centric working environment. The ability to lead a diverse crew and continue a unique approach to building the team in a competitive market is essential.
